Not heated from my end although it was my original question... I was somewhat
(actually more than somewhat) surprised the passion a relatively simple question
(so I thought) could generate. I was simply trying to ask a question and gain
clarity about the protection a drive encryption product offered. I had no
agenda.
FWIW, the folks at the password recovery company, AccessData, seem to think a
WinXP screen saver password takes a bit of work to recover. They say:
"Yes, PRTK can recover the WinXP Screen Saver/Logon Password without
booting the system. If the computer is already up and running you would
use one of our other products, FTK Imager to view the drive and export
the files needed. If the computer is not up and running you would have
to use FTK Imager to image the drive and export the files needed. After
this has been completed you would then be able to recover the passwords
using PRTK."
