Both effectively do the same thing.

The one problem with Center Across is if the cells inadvertently get formatted either Left or Right aligned then you have to go back and redo.

With cell merge the cells stay so reapplying Center alignment is a wee bit easier since you can quickly adjust from the tool bar.
