Sorry Don I don't see the difference.  Both ranges sort fine.

One caveat on using Cell Merge is that it is not too usable when using more than one row. Thus to set up a range say C1:F10 you would have to format each cols/row with cell merge within the range to get proper results.

Not being an Excel pro I will defer to your judgement.
