As to the question of why the music industry would bother to sell CD's
is becuase they are still the sole source of
revenue generated from the listening public at large. Many people who
sample music from Rhapsody.com for example would still be likely to buy
the actual CD either new or old release despite its poor reviews and
their narrowband Internet connection. Even if those same users upgraded
to newer broadband connections would still have the choice of either
downloading or buying the CD just to have an orginal copy.
Trading movies online is illegal and I do agree that this doesn't make
any sense as for the impending possible lawsuites that a user or users
would face from the RIAA's sueing against illegal file sharers. Why face
up to the fact that you could be forced to pay 3,500 to 4,500 dollars in
terms of damages placed upon the plaintiff (RIAA and musicians) by
defendants (file sharers) which can be anybody in particular and not
just college students in general?
Many convenience and electronics stores including Blocbuster sell cut
rate classic movies on DVD like Canonball Run and Hooper for $9.99 while
others can go for $14.99 and believe me this is worth it than facing a
certain fact paying 3,500 per se in damages levied against an illegal
activity.
Yes there some musicians that used to make money the honest way and in
fact they still do while others are so absorbed into the corporate music
money making machine that they forget how to do it. These musicians
didn't make millions overnight with the exceptions of Micheal Jackson,
The Doors and the Beatles and a host of others during the heyday of 60's
when music marketing was just getting into focus. Back then music was
first played on radio then shipped to stores as opposed to today when
music is made it now gets onto the internet before it even gets to a CD
and almost bypasses radio completely. Today for this reason of bypassing
radio the internet makes it much cheaper for musicians to produce and
distribute thier music compilations and it can reach millions of more
people all at once more so than radio did in the 60's , 70's and 80's.
Thus try before you buy is now becomming the ad-hoc mantra of the music
industry.
But its takes many years before musicians can make their first milion
they have to pay thousands of dollars to get
promotion deals and rights, distribitors, concert rentals, taveling and
lodging arrangements and other expenses.
I think that it is unfair to those artists who make good works the
likes of whom I refere to IMHO are Micheal jackson, Prince, Beatles,
Devo, Blondie, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Abba to steal music from them by
illegal downloads rather than to either buy the CD or subscribe to
Rhapsody. I call those musicians the greats and what better way I can
contribute to their good works is to simply pay for the CD and listen to
it.
Its smart, its fair and most of all legal. :)
