Figured I might as well throw my $0.02 in. Currently my monitor and hard drives power off after 1 hour of non-use, but the system isn't set to go into standby. This is the setup for both of our desktop machines. The laptop is the same except it goes into standby if plugged in and into hibernation if on battery.
Well I launch GRC's wizmo.exe <http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm> to turn off my monitor whenever I walk a way from my system for more than say a bathroom break & don't power down anything during the day. I may hibernate the thing when I retire for the evening unless it's busy downloading UseNet stuff that'll take a while which happens quite often.
