Although I am experiencing a problem right now, I have been pleased with the performance of the "lite" version of Retrospect from Dantz that came with my Maxtor external drive. It is a little quirky to set up but once configured runs well. I'm pretty sure there is a pricey (at least for me) serve version but I'm not sure if there's a reasonably priced single machine version.

Looks nice on paper though. From a posting I made to the WinNT list (dec 2004), comments of which were echoed by other users: Not sure how well it works under server oses, but from a recent experience setting it up for a client on XP, I'd rather bite my own leg off than use Nero BackItUp. I'm not sure what kind of drugs they were smoking when they designed that software.... To whit, you cannot preschedule an incremental backup job in any way I could find. From poking around, it looks like you have to do a scheduled or manual full backup before it allows you to schedule an incremental job. The manual says you can do it, but when you actually try it, the option to select the type of backup is either grayed out or doesn't exist (don't remember which as it was a few weeks ago) when creating jobs. I have it on my main workstation and may poke around with it again. Note this is using 6.6. Basically the job control sucks, not to mention the fact that it installs it's own scheduler rather than using the Task Scheduler already built into windows. For the XP client, I've purchased NTI's software. I've also used Stomp's BackupMyPC on workstations quite successfully. -- Harondel J.
