The effect, at least in the UK, is that Asus has two markets. It seems that only Asus approved distributors can supply the "Asus brand" product, but everybody can supply ASRock.
Even so, Asus has suffered with quality problems for a long time. So much so that I now only recommend "Gigabyte".
Based on previous discussion, I suspect that things are a little different in the US market !
There is very little difference in the US market from the UK as ASRock was a popular cheapie board for a short while. I wish that clients appreciated the difference between a $50 mombo & a $250 one but they don't even to accept one that is half way in between most of the time. I build way too many ultra cheap systems to suit my taste & then I get silly questions like why won't my system run Doom 3. Most of them don't care for it when I say hey, at least I built your system so it could be upgraded to run Doom 3 but that will cost you $100 or more for the upgraded video card. I wonder how many copies of Doom 3 were returned because people bought it for systems that couldn't handle it? </rhetorical>
