We have a fairly new Epson printer [a 960 or something like that -- it is one of the ones that uses that new/fancy ink] -- I only mention that because it might be different for your model, but: we had the same problem until I read the user's manual more carefully. If you push the 'ink' button *quickly*, the carrier goes out to the load position and stays there. If you hold the button down too long, the carrier comes out. darts back and forth a bit, and then goes back into hiding.
