I installed a D-Link Wireless Router for a friend. It has a desktop
computer attached by wire and a Notebook computer using the wireless
card. Both computers are running XP Home SP1 for the Desktop and SP2 for
the notebook. They were connected via a wired router prior to this with
no problems. They use a cable modem.

Since the install, the Desktop can only stay connected to the internet
for about 10 minutes. They are using ZoneAlarm. After losing the
connection on the desktop, even turning Zone Alarm off will not restore
the connection. The computer must be rebooted.

What could be the cause?

The notebook works great with the wireless connection, unless I try to
enable WEP. At that point, the notebook boots, thinks about things for a
while, then shuts down and reboots.

Any help on either of these problems is appreciated.

Is this a DI-624 by chance? If so, which firmware is installed. I've had one since November of last year. It came with v2.42 of the firmware installed. I was having problems with the wireless keeping a connection, so I installed the v2.50 firmware which supposedly fixed a problem like that.

Then in late February I started having problems with losing the wired connection periodically. It would immediately reconnect but if I was in the middle of downloading something or I had a VPN, telnet connection, etc. I would lose my connection and have to reestablish or redownload it. They sent me another v2.52 firmware, that wasn't yet on their website, and a variation of the old wireless loss of connection was back.

I finally insisted on returning the router as defective and have just received a new one with the v2.50 firmware installed. The jury is still out on this. Initially it appears to be working okay, but I have noticed a couple of messages that my wireless connection has been reestablished, which usually indicates it had been dropped. I also had a problem syncing all my offline files, but finally was able to finish that process.

Note: I'm using all 4 wired ports and my wireless is using WEP.
