I was thinking this would be the easiest, in part because he can run it 
regularly and update changed files. But... I didn't know if there was something 
easier that would eliminate the need for fix boot - like clone the disk so it's 
bootable to start, then use xcopy to key it current.

IMHO the cheapest way is to run xcopy /r/i/c/h/k/e/y then if & when the 
system's main drive conks out put the USB drive in it's place, boot the Xp 
Cd, go to the Recovery Console & run "fixboot", remove cd & boot as one 
normally would.
