You restore the MBR on the new drive after you've imaged all of the data from
the old
HD unit. FDISK /MBR is a non-destructive format which means it will only
restore the contents
of the original MBR from the backup on the new HD without losing any data.
FDISK /MBR will also resync (refresh) the MBR to match the current contents of
the new HD only if the MBR is corrupted of dosen't MBR exist.
Be carefull not to use FDISK /MBR if you are using a dual-boot system and have
used Storage Dimension's
SpeedStor utility to create an MBR. SpeedStor uses it own dimensions for the
number of physical and or logical heads, tracks and cylinders to define its
parameters for the HD. SpeedStor's /Bootall parameter stores this information
inside of the MBR which writes its own bootstrap loader code just ahead of the
MBR. If you use FDISK /MBR on this HD all of the physical drive partition
parameters will be lost and the HD usuable.
You may encounter problems when trying to FDISK /MBR with external USB HD
units. These USB HD units are actually removable media becuase they are
hotswappable in nature (easy to remove and connect while PC is on ) and since
this is so Windows XP calls these devices removable media just as are all CD,
DVD, ZIP and tapes are and treats them as such.
FDISK works only on large fixed media drives.

Hi,
I do have an external case for the drive. When I used Ghost 9 to copy the
old to the new, I kept getting messages that the destination drive was
running a program. There are no apps at all on that drive.
A question about the suggestion below. Do restore the MBR on the old drive
or the new one? When?
Warm Regards,
Lou
