Jim, Yes the CD-R disk are encoded in audio format rather than data format the reason I let Nero encode my mp3 files into CD-Audio (cda) format is because the CD's will play automaticaly in my portable stereo which is an AWIA CSD-ED57 which does not play mp3 files from a data CD. But my car stereo a Panasonic CFQ-583U plays mp3 files automaticaly.
I create such an mp3 CD data disk to try it out in my car stereo ;) As you've pointed out Jim the cda format does defeat the purpose of mp3 but I created some mp3 data CD's for backup of my music library and iPod. The size of the mp3 file varies with bit rate, total frequency and runtime. If you encoded mp3 files at a bitrate of 160 kbps sampled at a frequency of 44.1Hz which is normal for a CD the size of the mp3 file will be 3 to 5 mb on average but as the bitrate increases the bigger the mp3 files become. At 192 kbps the files range in size from 7 to 10MB which is too large for a normal mp3 file encoded at at bitrate of 160kbps at 44.1Hz. -----Original Message----- From: Windows Home/SOHO [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jim Maki Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 4:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: OT: Contents of Audio CD? > -----Original Message----- > From: MARC SIMS > > On average I can put 21 mp3 tracks on a 80min CD-R as long as each > track averages anywhere between a runtime of 3.5 to 4.5 minutes. Doesn't that defeat the main purpose of mp3s, the reduced size? An average mp3 is about 5 meg, so a 650 meg CD should be able to store in excess of 100 songs! You lost some of the quality in the mp3 creation process. You don't get it back by re-encoding the mp3 as audio. Many newer cd players and dvd players will play mp3 cdr disks directly.
