Nonsense, depends on who your provider is.

True, my error.

AT&T used to be one, but IIRC they sold their network to someone else
last year.

Cingular & fwiw I don't believe it was that long ago as the commercials just stopped for the merger/buyout.

What you need is an unlocked phone (tri band GSM for best results) and a simm
card for the pay as you go provider in Europe. I was just talking with a
Gentleman who travels to England and Germany a lot and he was saying you can
buy pay as you go cards for very cheap in Germany and unlike in North
America, the minutes are usable for up to 15 months. Most North American
providers give you a max of 3 months, if that. At the end of 3 months, if you
don't use the minutes, you lose them.

While the cards maybe cheap the charges per minute often are quite high so one uses those cheap minutes up quite quickly & then some have other connection fees like roaming & whether it's prime time minutes or not.

There are so many details out there & each requires one to check them out for themselves to see what fits there needs the best. We can provide links to sites with tons of information but the actual decision has to be made by the original author &/or her friend.
