Michelin screwed up BIGTIME.  Without a doubt !

As I see it, there were two options that could have salvaged something 
for the fans.  One was the chicane !  The other would have been to 
allow the replacement tyres to be used.  I belive that Michelin had 
flown in new tyres, I also heard that Bridgestone had offered to make 
tyres available.

Sadly this may actually be the case.  Both reporters (UK TV) expressed 
that they thought that this could be the end of F1 in the USA.  Lets 
hope not.
