Problem is that I have two [occasionally three] ISPs I dial into --
there'll be three [maybe four] "radio linked" systems around here: surely
every time I dial into the 'other' ISP I shouldn't have to go and
manually change the DNS config on every other system...

Usually the DNS servers are assigned automatically, during login.
However, I use manually selected 'generic' DNS servers that work regardless of which ISP you're connected to: 4.2.2.3 and 4.2.2.4.

Different DNS servers vary greatly in response time. There is a free utility (DNSpeed) that will test how fast your DNS servers are.
