He should be able to set the HP all-in-one to pickup after 1 ring, set the
answering machine to more than 1 ring. Depending on which model he has it
may have a built-in switch to detect a fax tone or to ring the phone line if
not. If his HP doesn't have that capability an external fax switch can be
purchased to perform that same function.
