The scanner software has to be installed BEFORE the scanner is connected
to the computer. From the HP support web site:
I just installed 2 HP printers on 1 machine & one of them was a ScanJet.
Both drivers had to be pre-installed before connecting either the scanjet
or the photo printer. Neither was recognized immediately but they were
recognized when Windows was rebooted.
