Subject: Retail v OEM Plus Mobos

The answer seems to be install 98se and then upgrade to XP for <$100.

My system is has only a bit of life left in it after the incident with the baseball bat -- so I now start the rebuild process.

My philosophy is that I don;t want to say in a few months "Damn! I wish I had......" Thus the system has to have as much versatility as

Note that the $90.00 cost of XP Upgrade (you can find it for around $90.00) is from 1/5 to 1/8 the cost of a new computer with XP OEM on it.

No matter what scoring formula people offer, experience tells me that Microsoft looks harder when a CPU is changed than at any other component or combination of components. I can move XP OEM from one computer to another (note that my intentions are to retire the computer I moved it from) and work out most any authentication problem, as long as I carry the same CPU forward. I hope this helps you in your decision to rebuild or buy a new computer. (XP upgrade vs. XP OEM on a new computer.)
