Bernie, it is obviously your call whether you go with satellite and WHO you go with, but I personally would stand clear of Starband. As I mentioned in a previous post, they have had their financial difficulties and some figure it is only a matter of time until they either get bought up or fold up. Further, while Direcway support may be less than optimal, Starband's, according to some users, is essentially non-existent.
Having been with DW for over a year now, and having done a LOT of research, reading and participation in the satellite forum at Broad Band Reports, were I just going into satellite now, I really think I would be looking very seriously at Wildblue. That said, DW is currently rolling out the new DW7700 modem/terminal for business class customers (read: EXPENSIVE!) and within the next month or 2 is supposed to be deploying the DW7000 SOHO unit, both of which are supposed to provide major improvements (and no, I don't know the specific improvements). One of the major complaints I hear about DW is that they treat their customers like mushrooms: keep them in the dark and throw a little crap on them occasionally. Right now is a good example; DW is "pushing" new firmware to the DW6000 modems that most of us are using, and even though many who have had this installed have documented problems, there is just no information forthcoming from DW, or even an acknowledgement that there IS a problem, and the firmware keeps getting pushed. Unlike Microsoft updates, you have NO option as to whether you take it or not; with DW, when they decide to push it, you ARE going to get it. Fortunately, so far it has not been "my turn in the barrel" on this one. I think I could probably live with those kinds of delays [although it'd make me a little crazy.. :o)]... I wonder if Starband gets similar numbers [we already have DISH and so if I went with Starband I could get by with just one dish].. -- ---------------------------------------- The WIN-HOME mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software.
