Short version: http://tinyurl.com/bbfqt Most people have no need of a static IP and unless you are a heavy downloader, you don't need the additional download capacity (bigger FAP) afforded by the Pro plan. The "Typical number of concurrent users" number on that site is totally misleading. For several days I had 5 computers on my network and it typically has 4 on at all times. Granted, they are not all being used full-bore all the time, but unless a large update or some such is being downloaded, we notice no slow down. My wife and I usually browse at the same time for several hours at a time with no problem. We have the standard consumer version with dynamic IP. In your particular configuration, unless you NEED a static IP for some reason, you are probably better off with a dynamic one. With the latter, you are provided with a pretty effective hardware firewall for all machines hooked into your network, and you will not need a router to network your and your wife's machines. Just plug the DW6000 (satellite modem) into a switch as well as the 2 machines, and Voila! You are both on the internet via satellite with no other equipment. Assuming you have the desired file and print sharing set up already between the 2 machines, your network is complete. With a dynamic IP from Direcway, the DW6000 handles routing and incoming firewall chores for you. Still a good idea to use a software FW to keep any spyware from calling home and you not knowing it. I use the free version of Zone Alarm. Once your Direcway system is active, you can set up your email accounts (up to 5); directions are available on your "My Direcway" page which you can access once your account is established. My 2 DW email accounts are checked every 10 minutes along with half a dozen others but I prefer using email through my own domains for most purposes. For one thing, I have essentially unlimited addresses on my domains... As to being unable to get a DW rep on the phone, Welcome To The Wonderful World of Off-Shore Support! Many users report being on hold for several HOURS on a "tech support" call. That is the reason many of us frequent the satellite forum on Broadband Reports to which I have previously referred you. - Bill Hatcher [EMAIL PROTECTED] - -----Original Message----- From: Windows Home/SOHO [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jim Dykes Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2005 13:19 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WINHOME] Satellite Internet I've been trying all morning to contact DirecWay at their posted number (866-664-2788). All I get, after a ton of rings is a message saying to enter Remote Access Code. Are they that hard to contact or is something wrong with their phone system, perhaps? Maybe someone can answer my question: What is the major advantage of the Professional plan? Here's my situation: My wife and I are networked (same room, almost side-by side). We do want to access the net at the same time and have different email addresses. I don't totally understand the static IP address thing, though. That seems about the only real difference........and I have had a static IP address for years... -- ---------------------------------------- The WIN-HOME mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software.
