Sounds like the old missing variable or missing quote marks in the file types list.
Here is an old KB article for Word 97 but I am sure you can find similar for newer versions of Word. If you open Word and then perform a "File, Open" browsing to the file in question does it open? If you can not open the file by double clicking, but it will open as above, you need to fix the "file type" stuff per MS.
