Is that softwareon the reinstall CD or on another the manufacturer supplies

I have found that Dell and Gateway have been more generous in furnishing Windows XP, hardware drivers and applications media on CD's. I think they burn those CD to their specifications etc.

Do you run it before you reformat and reinstall?

I do not run anybody's recovery media before I format and reinstall Windows XP. I said, "Recovery CD" when referring to Compaq, HP's and eMachines. I forgot that many include their restoration media on the hard drive, not on a CD. I think they allow you to burn Recovery CD's but many customers forget to do this and end up with nothing when they have a physical hard drive crash.

I find that most computers perform better with a clean install of Windows XP than they did with their factory installs which includes some useful things and lots of junk. Do not attempt a clean install unless you have the correct motherboard chipset and other resources hardware drivers. You also need the drivers for other hardware such as video, audio, modem, network card etc.

Often it is said I write as if I am speaking to newbies and sometimes as if I am speaking to experienced computer technicians. I feel the whole spectrum makes up this list, from newbie to experienced technician. Computer technicians know what to do when doing a clean install to replace a proprietary install. Others need to make sure they can do a factory recovery in case their attempt at a clean install does not produce the desired results.
