FWIW, I "updated" an HP WinXP Home to WinXP Pro SP2 and it _seems_ to be working
without problem. The "HP Recovery" partition (drive D) sits there taking up very
little space on a 160GB hard drive. I haven't bothered to remove it or much 
else.
Typically I'd buy a drive etc, build a system, and install everything from 
scratch
but I got a very good deal on this HP system about a year ago and I've been 
happy.

As for the original question: depends how one wants to backup. Karenware is free
and provides an easy uncomplicated backup via Replicator:
