 That is to use USB devices directly - you can't mount them as usb devices, 
you need to access them as shared drive letters from the host. VMWare will 
mount usb devices, which can be a royal PITA at times as it takes control of 
the device. I finally disabled it in VMWare because of this. 
 I do run some images from USB drives. I think it's slower, but it works. 
You should also be able to use images on CD/DVD as long as you use the 
option that doesn't save changes. (I forget what it's called.)
