I have been running 512 on all 3 of my networked machines then gave in to
the urge to buy 1Gb (2 x 512) DDR to top up my Dual channel Intel box and
instantly noticed with 1.5Gb DDR there were no wait times when recording
CDs, DVDs etc (not faster recording speed - that is the mechanical bit of
the drive but the computer bit - no saving before writing - zap to memory
and off it goes.
I have been told that on a 4 slot MB with Dual channel -- put matching chips
in 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 -- this can & "will" enhance your memory workability.
Slot 1 -- 512
Slot 2 -- 1024
Slot 3 -- 512
Have not tried it but was a reliable source.
