With my laptop it sees what ever is attached to the data cable as you call
it so if it's a floppy drive then the system sees that & if it's a CD,
CDRW, DVD or DVDRW drive there is no configuration required. Still I'm too
lazy to change drives as it easier to just change the media.
My reference was the ease of hooking up a USB floppy drive compared to going
inside a desktop computer and hooking up a 34 pin floppy drive cable.
Although I do not own a laptop, I can see the ease of using USB devices in
preference to trying to own an internal device for each service you desire.
Example: Why buy a huge internal hard drive? I have a Western Digital 160 GB
external hard drive that includes two built in card readers, also. That
would be a nice compliment to a laptop that has a 40 GB hard drive.
