Hugh, I'm currently specing 2 new systems - both will want CD/DVD rewriters
( I decided the cheapest options - PC World bargains and add bits!) A 'Patriot' @ £250 incl VAT 40 GB 2.4 Celeron 256 of DDR200 XP-Home - CD drive 4 external 5¼" slots, 2 external 3½" slots Add in some Kingston memory 512Mb will give 768 Add in a 250Gb drive if wanted - the 40 Gb can be backup - caddied so it can go in a safe A 'Packard Bell' 1307 - £400 incl VAT 160Gb, 56K modem, Lan, DVD+-DL, XP-Home, 17" screen So I want to replace the Patriot CD drive, and an aging 4x drive in an old system. I want Nero with the drives Looking at DABS.COM - can I find any information on which drives have software, and of those that do, what software H ! can I L Even the drive described as with software doesn't say what software Seems to me that the differences are: Headphone socket Burnproof mode Beige, Silver or Black Special media sensing while writing £30 approx will do for most 16x drives, DL or not - So, I'll be interested in the answers -------- I will say that I had problems with a 9 month old NEC drive - Sent it off to NEC, (£10) - back the next afternoon ! - fixed - no charge! Problems with Philips equipment have been met with a proposed £40 charge to look at whatever ! But then again at £30 in the local store is it worth the bother of getting something repaired --- JimB P.S. faulty drive - if it's on the same cable as the main drive, you're lucky it didn't take the hard drive, or at least the partitions and allocation tables with it All it wants is something to corrupt the command messages/data on the cable, or cause problems on the power lines while the hard drive is writing or positioning the heads A backup in the same box as the original has to be considered as 'at risk' and if it's electronically accessible - then it's at high risk. ---------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hugh Gundersen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 16, 2005 10:41 PM Subject: Re: SOFT: HELP!!!! switched on Someone say Hardwear failure ?????
