It wouldn't surprise me if this dude didn't set the alarm settings higher so that the CPU would be toasted by the time the alarm went off.

I have no idea what possessed me to do it but I messed with the CPU alarm settings one time on a customer's computer. Never again! I have learned that in Setup, the actual temperature readings of the CPU is often not near what they are in the Windows environment. The CPU alarm did not go off in my shop. Note that I do all work in my shop and rarely go to a customer's house. The customer called me to complain of a noise. Immediately upon hearing that loud tone in the background during the phone conversation, I realized what I had done. I asked the customer to turn the computer off immediately. I then went to his house, went into setup and put that CPU alarm back to what it was when I first messed with it. Since then, no more problems. I consider the changing of CPU's and CPU fans/heatsinks etc. very serious business and to be avoided where possible. My attitude must be working. So far in almost 8 years I have not had a CPU burn up.
