It is >>running fine IF I do not reboot.<< During reboot it ran so slow I
didn't think I'd get windows back up, thought it needed the little blue pill.
So, I am scared to shut down again, which I'll need to do eventually. In the
meantime I'm going to bed. Sweet dreams gang and thanks for all the help...

Lona, that makes it sound to me like it may NOT be a CPU problem. I don't
understand how it could be, since the problem seems to be ONLY the slow boot; I
would expect the machine to operate slowly all the time if it were the CPU,
either failing or underclocked.
Have you checked in Control Panel for any indication of hardware component
problems? Reason I ask is that a few months ago I had a CD burner go bad and it
took a LONG time for the machine to boot for me too, but it worked fine
afterwards. I did not normally use that drive very often so took quite a while
for me to figure out it was the culprit. Disconnected it and Voila! Since your
"fixer" was mucking around in BIOS, it is also possible he misconfigured some
of your hardware while in there.
You might also want to check what SOFTWARE is being started at boot (check both
start>programs>startup and in msconfig: start>run>msconfig startup tab). Could
be a hosed program that is taking a long time to either come up or be ignored.
Since you are not at ease with these things, it might be a good idea to call
the list member 20-odd miles away from you in Kent who previously offered
assistance and was jumped on for "soliciting business" here, assuming he is
still willing to help after being so unjustly chastised. It is, of course,
immensely more effective to trouble shoot in person than by speculation based
on minimal data...
Best of luck.
