Appliance" thread, that'd would be a good question for the winnt list.

Anyhow, there are many different types of vpn's
SSL, Ipsec, SSH based etc.

There are hardware based vpn's like:

Linksys BEFVP41
Fortigate FG60

Software ones like
OpenSSH
OpenVPN 
etc

Configuration ranges from easy to hard, it also depends on what you want to 
accomplish, do you need remote access to do system maintenance, provide 
access to files and printers in a remote office etc.

I personally favour hardware vpn routers and software vpn clients. However 
YMMV.
