Hopefully when the drive connects to your PC, it gets allocated one, or more partition id letters ( If you have formatted it )
Set up a bat file of xcopy commands (optionally get xxcopy) or replicator from www.Karenware,com Check google and the archives for more detail including the options to use on dos copy - you won't be able to copy all the files from your OS partition - indeed you shouldn't do the backup of your OS partition as a file copy run under that OS Ideally, use a partition backup/imaging application to take a restorable copy of the OS partition, then use xcopy to backup your data files on a regular basis you can even get a bat file to backup the entire set of data to a new directory including the date in it's name and - optionally only backup changed files most days of the week - with a fuller copy once a week/month JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "mwarmour" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 4:37 PM Subject: Backing up to external hard drive This must have been covered in the past, but I'm hoping someone will be patient enough to tell me where to find the info I need. I just bought a Maxtor external hard drive for backing up my Dell Inspiron laptop (WinXP Home). I want to copy my entire C drive, Outlook Express files and Favorites, then do scheduled incremental backups. (I'm pretty much a beginner at this.) I tried the Windows backup program but it requires using a floppy and I don't have a floppy disk drive. My Dell tech support chat session about this could be a standup comedian's script if he could do a good Indian accent.
