Ghost 9 usage invokes a checking routine that runs at startup, and
periodically during your 'day'
that routine reads such a volume of data from your disk, and so
aggressively/at such a high priority that it causes timeouts on comms
connections, CD/DVD access and any drive with delayed write enabled

And - the 'advice' I got from the Symantec (email - support) team was - you
cannot safely disable that process,
you should uninstall Ghost after a backup, and re-install it whenever you
want to create a new backup

However - having been lucky enough to speak (via telephone) to a
knowledgeable, and helpful person, I was advised to just disable the process
resetting it to automatic start before the boot within which I want to take
a new backup

I suspect that person has since been 'let go' because of his knowledge and
inappropriately helpful attitude towards customers
