Doesn't mean you can't get a new CPU, just because the Motherboard is no longer made.

THEN a friend called from Michigan tonight and said it -- could be the
battery?--- comments please?

Battery being dead wouldn't cause the machine to boot slow. It would mean that every time you disconnected (not just switch off the PC, actually disconnecting it from the power outlet) the power from the PSU, the CMOS would clear and you'd get BIOS warnings when you boot.

Also, my NSW is acting very strange, as are other things. Lost my active
desktop the other day, and had to get that back. So, slow start, and CPU
usage is horrid, it fluctuates.

Uninstall NSW, se if that helps.

What is taking up the CPU time on boot?
