Subject: Re: How to merge partitions?

Combining that info with Partition Magic I was able to clean up the drive. Thanks to all who responded to my problem.

For future reference for those with less experience, if you back up all of your data safely on other media, you can "start over" in partitioning and formatting your hard drive and copy the data back, later.

When you use the software furnished by your hard drive manufacturer, it handles the task quickly and efficiently. It does not care how many partitions exist or their type. It does not care if the partitions are formatted. It does not care if data exists or not (but all data will be erased.) It simply partitions the hard drive into the amount and size you select. Normally people opt for from 1 to 4 partitions. I have often went as far as having 10 partitions (for special needs.)

When you use Partition Magic (always back up all of your data before any risky procedure such as this) it has to move lots of your data around in the process of splitting, merging and/or resizing partitions. This is risky and time consuming.

I am glad you got through the risky procedure. I hope your valuable data resides on other media (another hard drive, CD or DVD etc.) for safekeeping.
