Use Ctrl Alt Del to bring up Task Manager
Go to the processes tab
get the display showing Image Name, PID, CPU, Mem Usage, Mem Delta, Page
Faults, VM Size, IO Read Bytes, IO Write Bytes,I/O Other

That should give you a hint as to the process that is using the CPU,
and may even give you a clue as to what is happening.

However - things to consider -
XP is at SP1 so the system is very much at risk
from intrusions Trojans etc. -
it really aught to be at SP2 plus the later fixes.

With only 20Gb of disk there may be space problems
as XP running with only 384Mb memory will
almost certainly want to use a fair amount of pagefile,
I would not recommend a system with less than 512 for XP
( if you have the disk space set a permanent pagefile of at least 700Mb )

You say no programs running - which contradicts your other statements
as the system is using CPU, so you must, at least have the OS, and a
monitor running,
and the OS is a collection of programs

No 'user applications' could - possibly be a more correct statement -
and with this type of problem you need to be as specific and correct as
possible.

So -
Are you running a firewall,
Are you running an AV package
Are you running an anti-intrusion package other than the firewall

Is the comms line connected - and what type of device and connection is it

What do you mean by 'functional again',
as in it used to do.....,
and it now does....

And was there a problem before the memory 'stick' was first added

Subject: HARDware: CPU usage 100%

A friend's old Dell (XP SP1, 384 meg RAM, P4-1.8gig, 20 gig HD) cannot
seem to run very well. When you check CPU usage in Task Manager, it
shows 100% usage.

The memory is in the form of 1 256meg stick and 1 128 meg stick of DDR.
Removing the 128 meg stick actually makes the computer functional again,
but the CPU usage is still 100%.

There are no programs running. I have run a current version of AdAware
and run a complete virus scan. No spyware was found, but 6 viruses were
found and cleaned out.

Using msconfig.exe, I have shut down all the services listed in
start-up.

Still, the computer shows 100% CPU usage.

Does anyone know what could be eating up the CPU time?

Thanks,

Rod Lindgren
