I've just looked at the Linksys web-site, & I think I've
found a solution : the WRE54G Range Extender, which can be

Very interesting mixed reviews of the WRE56G on different
forums. Quite a number of complaints could be traced back to
'eebcak' though. One n00b complained long and loud about
"AutoConfig" not working, then ends with the following; "I had
to turn off the WEP to get the AutoConfig to work, man."

Dude... on the front side of the Quick Install sheet is the
following, "IMPORTANT: The Auto configuration button is only
used in networks without WEP Security enabled."
Probably never RTFMed in his life. :)
Anyway, not too many folks are familiar with the following
interesting FAQ about the WRE54G expander.

Speed Considerations When Using WRE54G
Question
How will the WRE54G affect transmit rate for wireless clients
that are using it to connect to the Wireless LAN?
Answer
The Range Expander will reduce the transmit rate to
approximately half of the original source data rate
transmission.
For example, when the WRE54G detects a 54 Mbps connection with
a WAP54G, WRT54G or WRT54GS, it will relay approximately half
of the transmission rate to the wireless clients that are
connected to it. In this case, the wireless client will
connect at a speed of approximately 22 Mbps.

BTW, for a Tim "The Toolman" Taylor approach to the problem,
the following items would earn Tim's "hhhhhhuuuuuuu" seal of
approval [use with caution if Interpol is nearby :) ].

BA24 - 500mW Booster Antenna
The BA24 is designed to increase the performance and range of
any wireless device in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, including all
Bluetooth, P2P, P2MP, 802.11b, 802.11b+, 802.11g, and 802.11b+g
access points and wireless routers.
POE30 - 1 Watt POE Amplifier
The POE30 is a unique approach to the RF Power Amplifier. This
unit is designed to function as an amplifier as well as
transferring data over the same CAT-5 line that carries DC
power. This enables a substantial reduction in install time, as
well as providing greater flexibility in regard to termination
locations and distances
