No, you'll at least need a cable adapter to plug in the 2.5" hard drive from the laptop to a standard IDE cable used with 3.5" hdrives.

I've heard of Toshiba laptops that would shut themselves off when overheating. If the CPU cooling fan has failed or is running too slow, that could be the situation here. Or there could be a build-up of lint or dust in the cooling fins/passages. And if not that, there's some other hardware thing gone seriously wrong. At this point I'd be removing the hard drive to recover data if there are no recent backups. You can get a little external USB case for a laptop hard drive for about $10.
