Three more checks before tossing it:

1) Memory might have gone south. Run Memtest86 3.2 from http://www.memtest86.com/ to test the memory.

2) If memory passes the memtest86 tests, try booting with a simple Win98 boot disk to the a: prompt and just leave it sitting there. If it reboots (or freezes), it's probably a hardware problem, most likely heat related. [DOH! :) ]

3) If nothing happens at 2, and if you have recovered, or given up on recovering, any data from the disk, then you might try the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic software to zero out the drive. Then try to install XP from scratch on the drive.
