You need an NTFS boot disk (floppy or CD). There's a free
one mentioned here (I haven't used it):

I created a DOS boot disk on a desktop system running XP Home SP2. I
added the chkdsk.exe file fro Windows/System32 and booted the computer
with this disk. I tried to go to C:, but it came back saying Invalid
Drive Specification.
