Ignore the HDTV and Blu ray specs for the rest of this year, and possibly
most of next year,
when you will probably be upgrading from current (then outdated) system.

And you stand more chance of getting new CODEC's for the PC than for a DVD
player only designed for connection to the TV
(Xvid - MP4 etc. as well as the 'lossless audio ones - if you really want
to use Hi-Fi quality headphones and get surround sound effect)

Technical update from those 'into' using this stuff please

I can do HD DVDs now. Actually it's HDTV via a DVD in that I capture streaming ATSC video & then burn it to a DVD for playback later. The only problem with this is that a one hour show takes up a minimum of 5.5g at 1080i therefore I'd have to burn that to a DL disk which are approx 3 USD each at this point so I'd really have to want that show in order to bother burning it to a DL DVD disk. I usually just record it to a HD to watch later then delete the file. One can also download HDTV programs via the NewsGroups but with a 1 hr program less commercials that is actually a 45 min program with a 5mbs connection still takes 3.5 hrs to download then there is the legality question. For those that are interested one can convert HDTV to standard DVD format if they don't mind watching SDTV &/or don't want to spend the extra loot for the DVD9 blanks. Still recording via ones computer still beats what stand alone recorders can do in image quality but all this takes a lot of patience when it comes to doctoring videos.
