They have about 6-7 PCs running XP, W2K and maybe W98. They are all

Do they have a 98 system or not as it makes all the difference in the world ?
Let's ignore the 98 system if there is one. The W2K and the XP are the
ones of immediate interest.
My wife has a large collection of files that she would like to
transfer to a W2K computer from her XP machine. I thought that a
network transfer would be easier than (ugh!!) floppies or CDs.
Right now, if I go to Network Neighborhood on any of the computers
on th LAN, I see no other computers.
Do the other computers share their HDs or Folders?
No need at this time. Just the two.
(Do I need NetBEUI? I don't think so but some sites say I do.)
98's TCP/IP don't support NetBios via the network very well so you
should use WINS resolution on the 98 machines. In the WINS resolution
box you should list all the other machines ip addresses that you want
to communicate to & from. You can network without using WINS but it
does slow things down across the lan.
I think I can use the wizard in XP to get things started and I think
I can copy the settings to the W2K computer.
I flunked wizards & set everything up manually. Usually if you set up
everything for automagically then providing that you have the users &
HD configured properly then things just work but if they don't you
have to go back to the beginning so I start there first. ;-)
I have to set up an account on each computer for the other user, right?
Not necessarily but probably a good idea especially if you want to
set limits on what users can do to other computers on the LAN.
This could end up being just a temprary setup, just for the purpose of
transferring the files. The big cheese doesn't want to address file
sharing at this time, probably because their "IT" person don't know s**t!
What have I forgotten to ask? :-)
Are you using simple file sharing or not?
Not using any file sharring yet, AFAIK. Does W2K have simple FS?
If anyone knows of an accurate, simple step-by-step website, I'd be
forever indebted.

I'll look there (again, as I recall).
Thx.

Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.
