No need at this time. Just the two.
You had previously stated 6 or 7. Only 2 machines could be peer to
peer versus a LAN. I do it all the time when hooking up my laptop to
some ones machine.
One of us misunderstood. There are 6-7 machines all hooked to the same
router/switch for Internet axis but I an concerned only with two fo them
for the purpose of file transfer.
This could end up being just a temprary setup, just for the purpose
of transferring the files. The big cheese doesn't want to address
file sharing at this time, probably because their "IT" person don't know s**t!
In that case you want to do a peer to peer connection & not set up a
LAN. You could besides cat5 use firewire or usb 2.0 or even printer
or serial port connection with a laplink cable albeit will be slower.
See comment above.
Heck my favorite file mgr is Total Commander & they include the
ability to do a port to port transferring of files.
I have TC v6.53 and I don't see where "port-to-port" file transfers are
mentioned.

Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.
