Thanks, Carl, this did it. I hunted through all the blankety-blank
networking software dialogs, but I don't think it would ever have occurred
to me to look in device manager. It was driving me crazy...

Find the network adapter, right-click, Properties.
There's usually an Advanced tab and maybe a Power Management tab.
If only the Advanced tab, look for a idle or power save property there.
