These drives have different laser LEDs for the CD and DVD function. It is quite possible that one fails while the other continues to work.

The drive plays DVD's fine but will not play music CD's or read data CD's. The computer is about 1 year old and this problem started about 1 month ago. He's running Windows XP. The drive shows up in My Computer and in Device Manager where it is listed as working properly. If you put in a music or data CD and attempt to explore it the window that appears shows no files on the disc. I had him uninstall the drive via Device Manager and after reboot there was no change in the problem. I had him upgrade to the newest firmware from the Lite-On website also without a change in the problem. I'm thinking that the drive itself is malfunctioning and needs replacing. Any other suggestions?
