They are not put anywhere. Still in the same place on your hard
drive. There are several utilities that can recover these files.
Ontrack Easy Recovery comes to mind.
Typically the file is just renamed replacing the first letter with a
$ therefore the file becomes hidden but the space that file took on
the HD is marked as being available. One can usually reclaim the file
if it's done before too much else is written to the drive & this is
why I include in my XpPe compilations a freeware restoration
<http://www.geocities.jp/br_kato/> utility that does exactly that
unerase files that didn't make it into the Recycle Bin. FWIW in this
case Hugh would have to run the restoration utility on the system
where the files resided.
