Hi,

3 weeks ago, I bought a new box+mobo+CPU+RAM, also with the idea of "simply" transfering my drives. The guy in the shop said I would have to re-install Windows. "Yeah, yeah", I thought, "but I'm not running XP!". However, it wouldn't start up (big scare!), so it *was* necessary to "re-install" Windows (2K) on top of itself, & I had to run Windows Update a couple of times, but nothing else was harmed. The only noticeable change was the 30-sec timer in the dual-boot menu (I had 3-sec before). And yes, even Win98 was still in place! YMMV!

Regards,

Subject: Re: new HD radix: ? migration

I have been told by a couple of folks, including the people I
bought new box from, that because the new CPU has a different
chipset than the old that I can't just swap out my HD's from
the old box to the new, which had been my plan.

IMHO, you should be able to do this. You will most likely need to boot
from your installation CD and run a repair install in order to to get
the proper drivers for the new hardware in the proper places.
