Are you running XP on both machines? Home or Pro? In Home (or Pro
in a p2p, non-domain setup), the workgroup name shouldn't matter. I
often take my machine to a friend's house for LAN parties and we
always have at least three workgroups going: MSHome, Workgroup, and
4077th (that's mine). We have a mixture of Home and Pro systems and
we can all see each others' shares in My Network Places.
Is File and Printer Sharing turned on for both machines? Are you
running a software firewall? The builtin XP firewall should already
be configured for F&PS, but a third party one probably isn't. In
Zone Alarm, for example, you have to explicitly set the LAN as a
trusted zone, unless that's changed with a recent version. I haven't
used it in a while. YMMV with other firewalls.
Something definitely seems out of kilter, though, because it really
shouldn't be a problem. You could try running the Network Setup
Wizard in My Network Places. There may be a setting that is screwed
up somewhere that that will correct. If you do, run it on both
machines and set them both up the same way.
HTH.
