I used to use v8 but have since upped to v9.  I simply select the backup
and then choose the drive to put it on.

I am wondering if you are doing this from a bootable CD or from the OS?

The bootable CD allows this whereas. I think, doing it from the OS won't
allow you to overwrite the current OS whilst you are actually using it.
