It's a Dell Inspiron and she says it's only identified as 8-something. I don't follow this, but she insists that there is no further model number visible anywhere on the computer or in the documentation. I've asked her to check if there is a service tag or express service code # on the bottom.

She knows that she'll need an access point or router. Probably PCMCIA, as she only has USB 1. I'm not sure what kind of slots they are; if I can figure out what kind of computer she's got I'll check the Dell documentation.

PS She doesn't want to do anything too fancy -- just would like to be able to use DSL.

Does she have a wireless access point or wireless broadband router? If not, she will have to get one in order to use DSL with a wireless PCMCIA (or usb) adapter in the laptop. One more item to keep in mind. :)
