Sound volume control in Win has several sliders, including the master 
volume slider.  Some of the sound/video players control the Wave 
slider, but if you're not looking, you won't see it.

When you close the player, you leave the win slider in some lower 
position, so the next time another player opens it, it can be too low 
to be heard.

I do not use Real Player, but have seen it happen in Media Player 
Classic.  Eventually managed to set the options such that it did not 
happen.  OTOH, maybe my settings had nothing to do with it - it just 
happened by itself :-)
